14:15 Market Rasen — El Presente 7/4 1.5pt Win
My first selection comes from the summer jumps meeting at Market Rasen, I will be taking El Presente to build on a facile win on seasonal return.
El Presente made a pleasing start to life over fences last season when not being beaten far at Huntingdon. That day he could only manage 4th behind Whatamore (138), Pym (150) and Deyrann De Carjac (145). I think it’s worth noting that both Pym and Deyrann De Carjac went into that race of the mark of 137 and improved as the season went on.
El Presente didn't put his best foot forward in either run following that, unseating his rider and being pulled up on both starts.
He made a very impressive comeback just 27 days ago following a wind op, pulling 17L clear of the 2nd. This is a tougher assignment today going up into a class 2 after a 9lb hike in the weights but a reproduction of his last effort should see him bang there.
14:50 Deauville — Circus Maximus 5/1 0.5pt E/W
Some lovely Group 1 action coming from France with the likes of Palace Pier, Alpine Star, Romanised and Circus Maximus making the trip over to tackle Persian King.
Palace Pier is a warm favourite for the contest for a couple of reasons, firstly his impressive win of the St James’s Palace Stakes and also because jockey Frankie Dettori is shouldering a 14-day quarantine for this trip to France.
I will be looking to take on the favourite as I believe he won't want this testing ground. I'm also not a fan of Persian King who is clinging on to a reputation he built as a 2 and 3yr old, his form this season shouldn't give him hope in hell.
I’ll be sticking with the seriously overpriced Circus Maximus, this battle-hardened runner gets overlooked in the market more often than not. He doesn't have the classy look of the horses at the head of affairs but he handles all ground and will be there pitching at the finish.
He is Mr consistent in this mile division, since the start of his 3yr old campaign his form over the mile reads 121412 with all six coming in Group 1s. Sprinkled in between those six runs were a listed win over 1m2f, 6th in a derby and 7th in a Juddmonte.
15:15 Ripon — Dakota Gold 9/1 0.5pt E/W (6 Places) / Mr Lupton 22/1 0.25pt E/W (6 Places)
Big field handicaps are normally on my avoid list, but after seeing the price of last years winner Dakota Gold I will be having a small go on him here. I also want to have a go on Mr Lupton who is looking very well handicapped.
I will start with Dakota Gold, last seasons winning machine with 5 wins in 7 races. Going up 13lbs from a mark of 97 to 110, he started out in class 2 handicaps and managed to finish his season with a win at Listed level.
Not as good this season but he's been gradually coming down the weights and now finds himself out listed and group level back into class 2s. These calmer waters should really help him recapture his form from last season and hopefully, this can be the turning point in his season.
I also want a small saver bet on Mr Lupton who will appreciate the easing ground at Ripon.
Mr Lupton started his season off a mark of 107 and wasn't disgraced in the Group 3 Abernant Stakes. That day he was 5L behind the July Cup winner Oxted, he hasn't built on that with his next two runs when getting stuffed but on both occasions, he’s encountered quicker than ideal conditions.
He’s now of his lowest mark since 2015, the strong pace will suit as he’s got form over further and hopefully this old boy can recapture his old form.
